George Strait Team Roping Comes to a Close

You may have seen the announcement just two days ago, where George Strait announced that the 35^th anniversary of the George Strait Team Roping Classic (GSTRC) would be the last event. He quotes, “It is with a lot of thought and sleepless nights that I along with my family have decided to call the 35th anniversary of the GSTRC our last one. It’s hard to believe we’ve been doing it for more than half of our lives and for most all of our kids’ entire lives.Believe me when I say this decision doesn’t come easily, and I know we will miss it.”

The long-standing team roping was held at the San Antonio Rose Palace for the past several years, and originated in Kingsville Texas. It was the largest open team roping in the United States, with millions of dollars awarded over the years, but contrary to what one might think, its origins were small and family oriented. Just this past year, over $500,000 was awarded in cash.

Ropers all over the country would travel to the Lone Star State to compete in the GSTRC, and it is the place where many of the greats got their start. Many of our RopeSmart Sponsor Team Ropers have competed in the event, and just this past year RS sponsored roper Dustin Egusquiza took home the win in the first go round with partner Kory Koontz as well as the Friday Fast Time on 2.

The event will be missed by many, but we are glad to have been a part of it, and to have had it in the hometown of RopeSmart. Many thanks to the King of Country for hosting such an outstanding event for the past 35 years.
